Dawson Vandervort

I'm Dawson Vandervort and I'm an alumnus of Butler High School where I served as the Student Body President. I'm currently studying Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Dayton, where I will be a Junior. My ultimate goals are to attend law school and graduate with a joint J.D. and M.B.A. degree.

I decided to run for the Board of Education because I have become aware of certain flaws in the system. The overall grade for our school district, according to the Ohio Department of Education, is a C, while the college readiness grade is a D. I believe with the right adjustment and a reinvestment in education, both of those grades will be raised to their former marks. High school is the time to learn about one's own values, beliefs, methodologies, and interests. Education is more than just a building and a degree. It is an investment in our friends, children, siblings, nieces, nephews, and any other description of the students learning in our schools. It is about the institution and the philosophies that guide our district.

My strongest asset for the Board is what some may perceive as a weakness: my youth. As the youngest candidate, I have the most experience with the educational system of today, specifically in Vandalia-Butler. I know what universities are looking for and what struggles students face prior to taking the leap into higher education. My experiences are my strengths, and my experiences are that of a student first.
